Chichén Itzá

Of the many archaeological sites situated on the Yucatán Peninsula, Chichén Itzá is the most famous. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an ancient Mayan capital city – at its heart sits the Pyramid of Kukulcan (or El Castillo), which in 2007 was named one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The history of Chichén Itzá is fascinating, and if you choose to take a trip here, you’ll learn all about the important roles of these striking limestone structures in the time of Mayan civilization. The Pyramid of Kukulcan in particular was once a site of sacred worship and ritual, and to this day still holds a certain mystique.

Being that it’s such a culturally significant landmark, Chichén Itzá is well worth a visit if you’re looking to learn a little bit about the history of Southern Mexico.

Gran Cenote

A dip in a tropical cenote is a magical experience that everybody should have at least once in their lifetime. In Mexico, Tulum’s Gran Cenote is both a local and tourist favourite.

The site as a whole is actually a system of several connected pools, with the main one reaching around 200 feet deep. The central pool is surrounded by lush jungle vegetation, and is only partially covered – so once you’ve fully explored the glimmering depths, you can enjoy a little float around as you bask in the warm streams of sunlight.

The cenote is home to lots of colourful tropical fish and even small turtles, making a swim here a truly exotic experience.

Las Coloradas

It’s not often you get to see a pink lake, so a trip to Las Coloradas is truly a unique way to spend an afternoon in Mexico. This man-made site gets its colour from the salt content of the water – the brine shrimp, plankton and red algae that reside here all contribute to the concentrated rosy hues. If you stick around into the evening hours, you’ll get to watch as the lake turns from light pink to fuschia with the setting of the sun.

While the lake might not be a natural sight, it is an entirely beautiful one. And, as if the pink waters alone weren’t enough to capture your imagination, Las Coloradas is a popular gathering point for flamingos, which only adds to the dreamy atmosphere of the destination.
