Like Camping But Hate Roughing It?

Camping can be an exhilarating experience. It provides an opportunity to be close to nature and to embrace a simple existence for the duration of your trip. However, if you don’t like being without your creature comforts, the very thought of a camping holiday may fill you with dread.

Fortunately, there are compromises. Camping doesn’t have to be all about roughing it and doing without. There are ways to have a great outdoor experience without giving up on comfort.

Glamping

Glamping is so called because it combines camping with something a little more glamorous. Die-hard campers dismiss the concept, and suggest it’s not genuine camping. But it can be a viable alternative for those who don’t want the full-on camping experience.

Often, you don’t even have to sleep in a tent. There are lots of options, including yurts, pods, and wigwams, many of which include heating, rugs, and furniture. It’s still preferable to pack light, as you won’t want to carry your belongings around or leave them in the car. However, you’re unlikely to need much equipment, as most glamping accommodation is adequately stocked.

Camping with Comforts

If you feel that glamping is not ‘proper camping’, there are still lots of options to raise the comfort levels while staying in a tent.

The first consideration is the campsite. Avoid anywhere that refers to ‘rough’ or ‘wild’ camping. This suggests that facilities are minimal. In other words, your toilet facilities will consist of a spade and a roll of toilet paper that you will need to provide yourself. Instead, opt for campsites with good facilities. Basic sites usually include shower blocks, toilet facilities, and a place for washing dishes. More upscale ones will feature restaurants, cafes, and even swimming-pools.

Sleeping is an important consideration when it comes to camping. For some people, lying on hard ground may not be conducive to a good night’s sleep. There are decent mats you can purchase to add some comfort. Airbeds are also an option, but as they can quickly absorb the cold from the ground, take care which one you buy.

A sleeping bag will keep you toasty warm, but there are no rules. If you prefer, bring your own bedding from home, including pillows and your duvet. Hammocks are also a great way to relax and doze during the day. Need a camping hammock? Do some research to find one that suits your needs.

Eating

One of the high points of a camping trip is sitting around a campfire with people you love and eating camp food. Tea and coffee taste so much better when drunk from an enamel mug while sitting in a forest as the sun comes up. You can also try toasting smores while you tell each other ghost stories.

Camp food doesn’t have to be all about tinned potatoes and baked beans. Look up a few recipes before you leave, or fire up a BBQ. Eating by your tent can be alternated with trips out to local bars or restaurants. You are on vacation, after all.

Apart from practicalities and safety precautions, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to camping. The trip can be whatever you make it. So, bring along a few luxuries and experience the best of the outdoors without compromising on comfort!
